As a part of Forensic Services at Aurora Mental Health & Recovery (AMHR), the Aurora Sustained program screens individuals and offers them behavioral health services. This voluntary offering helps clients overcome barriers and reduce the chances they will reoffend. Aurora Sustained partners with stakeholders in the criminal justice system to provide individuals with early behavioral health screening and assessment. We also support clients throughout the court process and connect them to mental health and addiction recovery services.

Aurora Sustained Services

Aurora Sustained serves as an entry point for individuals in custody pre-bail bond hearing, and throughout the court process. We work in concert with the judicial process to address mental health and substance use needs.

We Provide:

  • Mental Health Screening and Assessment
  • Support to Individuals (interacting with the Municipal Court)
  • Follow Up and Connection to the Mental Health System
  • Ongoing Case Management and Treatment for Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery Services

Benefits of Aurora Sustained

By offering support for individuals at the earliest possible stage of engagement with the justice system, we can reach individuals with significant needs who otherwise might not be connected to mental or behavioral health services. Our process then supports the justice staff members working with the client to ensure continuity.

Benefits of the program include:

  • Increased efficiency of the court process as it relates to mental health and competency needs
  • Increased access for clients to mental health services
  • Overall reduction in recidivism
  • Reduced cost to the City of Aurora, Counties, and Systems
  • Improved welfare of Aurora residents.
  • Limiting those who are in the judicial system but should be in the mental health/treatment system
  • Effective tracking of justice-involved clients’ interactions with the mental health system

Our Process

The purpose of our program is to screen individuals in the Aurora Detention Center before their first hearing, to educate them on the availability of mental health services and provide support and guidance throughout the process. Our mental health professionals meet with clients every morning and continue to provide care after release.

At Aurora Municipal Court this entails:

  • Screening
  • Assessment
  • Risk Assessment for Suicide etc.
  • Connection to Services
  • Follow-Up Care
  • Support of the Competency Evaluation Process

Aurora Sustained operates primarily in the Aurora Detention Center and Municipal Court in partnership with all the teams, including the Public Defenders, Marshalls, Detention, and Administration.
