Breaking the stigma—finding mental wellness

For some of us, it can be hard getting through each day. Feelings of sadness, anger, loss, frustration, worry, and anxiety can take over our lives.

Getting help is made more difficult since it has been ingrained in so many of us that we just have to deal with it, or fear being ridiculed for our feelings.

When loved ones or peers say “get over it,” “toughen up,” “things aren’t that bad,” “stop feeling sorry for yourself,” and so many negative words and phrases may make it seem easier to try to ignore what’s happening, even when life feels overwhelming.

Holding in negative emotions can lead to worsening symptoms and destructive behaviors such as substance abuse to lashing out in anger and frustration at co-workers, friends, and family members. The critical thing to remember is we are not alone. Even if you live by yourself or feel isolated, help is a phone call away.

Breaking the stigma of mental illness and mental health care is something we all can do. Talking about how you feel and what’s happening in your life can be a big step toward getting help.

In the U.S., nearly half of adults, 46.4 percent, will experience a mental illness during their lifetime; regrettably, only 41 percent of people with mental illness will get care from a mental health provider.

It doesn’t need to be this way.

We can change the way we view mental health and make it a priority in our daily lives, from daily self-care to reaching out for help. Talking builds connections, especially now during COVID, as we exist virtually. No one needs to suffer in silence.
